AGE OF THE PARTICIPANTS:
Boys and girls, from 12 to 20 years old can attend our Homestay Programs.
Younger students may attend the same SpainBcn Summer Program through a DAY PROGRAM while they are in Barcelona with their parents or tutors (as participants younger than 13 are not accommodated with our Spanish host families).
MORE ABOUT THE HOST FAMILIES:
We place our students with our nice host families who have children with similar ages who will be attending also our programs.
The son/s and daughter/s of the host families also attend the sport camps and several of the summer program activities together with the students they have at home. Host families also help us with the students supervision.
All our host families have been working with us for several years. They are all educated and polite people that will offer a warm and kind envoirement to the student. Daily breakfast and dinner are with the host family. Our host families will offer a warm envoirement and take good care of our students. Laundry (1 or 2 per week) is included.
Students are placed with the Spanish families according to their preferences: they choose to be placed alone, with a brother/sister or friend/s or with other participant of our teen summer programs with similar age.
Most of the host families live short walking distance from the School and always in the center of the city in some of the most safe parts and nice and residential areas.
This program has a curfew for all participants.
CURFEW:
All participants of the SpainBcn-Summer Programs have a curfew (11:00 pm) that must be respected.
The school and the host family won't be resposible for the students that go out without supervision.
Parents who want to allow their children to go out on their own after dinner will have to send a formal authorization to the program.
Younger participants can not go out after dinner time and this rule will be stricly enforced by the school and by the host family.
** Those parents or guardians who want to permit their children to go out after the curfew have to send to the school a formal permission slip before the student can go out. Please contact us in advance regarding this matter.
** Those parents or guardians who want to permit their children to go out after the curfew have to send to the school a formal permission slip. Some of our host families do not want this situation. In that case, SpainBcn-Programs will then have the option of moving the student with a different host family.
CLOTHES TO BRING:
Summer is very warm in Barcelona, students should bring summer clothes. Participants have to bring just their spring and summer clothes, casual wear: in June and July temperature can be between 24º and 29º Celsius (68 and 78 Farenheit), hot during the day and warm during the night.
Remember to bring the swimming suit, towel and sunscream for the beach days.
The host families provide the student/s with any towels, sheets and pilows needed.
Students have at SpainBCN school any material they need for the Spanish lessons and all information about the city.
It's not necessary to bring any first aid medicine (except in the case the student needs anything special).
If you have a question regarding to bring any special item, please ask us.
DOCUMENTATION:
You will need a current passport to be in Europe (or just your identification if you are an European citizen).
Carry always a copy with you while in Barcelona but NOT the original document that you will have to keep inside your laugage.
For United States and Canada: No visa is required for this period in Spain .
Participants from other countries: Please check with the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country.
SHOTS: Check with your doctor to see what shots you might want to consider. None are required.
We always recommend keeping your tetanus booster current.
DO I NEED A MEDICAL INSURANCE?:
Those students who are from the European Union won't need any special medical insurance as it will work the same that works in their countries. For those participants from a non European Union country a trip insurance is recommended.
These participants (from a non European Union country) will have to have an insurance that covers them while traveling in Europe in case they want to reduce any possible expenses from any medical assistence they may need while in Spain.
If that is your case, a travel insurance is an essential purchase on any overseas trip.
UPON ARRIVAL AT THE BARCELONA AIRPORT...
The name, picture and phone number of the person from SpainBcn-Programs waiting for you on arrival will be provided 1 week before the arrival
We are in constant communication with airline flight arrival information. In case the flight arrives earlier or later than the scheduled arrival time we will be there when the plane arrives at Barcelona.
In the rare case when a student may miss a connection enroute to Barcelona SpainBCN will make sure someone is at the airport when the student arrives.
FIRST DAY OF PROGRAM:
The first day of program the host family accompanies the student to the school or a teacher or coordinator of the school will go to pick the student up. Our our host families live in the same area of the school between 5 to 20 minutes walking distance from the school. Teachers or coordinators will pick up the students at their host families to accompany them to the school. They will also accompany them back to the host family after the program afternoon activities.
PHONE CALLS FROM SPAIN:
Participants are normally not permitted to make long-distance phone calls directly from their host family's phone or from the School phone.
They have to use a phone card to make those calls. However students' parents may call the participants at the accommodation at specific times. It is also customary to keep calls brief to not interrup to much the family's life.
Most of the host families have internet at home so students can use it.
There is also internet and computers available at SpainBcn-School.
Student can use any public or private phones with the pre-paid cards or pre-paid phones (which are very cheap and available in many stores in the city).
POCKET/SPENDING MONEY:
We suggest to bring around 100 euros per week for lunch or for other minor expenses -approximately 10 euros per day-.
Lunch from Monday through Thursday is at SpainBcn School for those students younger than 14.
In this case students who want to eat at school have to inform us the day before if they are going to have lunch at school the next day.
Those students who choose to have lunch out of school (there are many places with all types of foods and for all budgets in the area and the meal will be at student's own cost) have to stay in the school area and be back at school at 3:45 pm. for the afternoon cultural activity.
A complete menu will cost around 9 euros and more simple meals can be around 6 euros.
The school will prepare a package-lunch or a picnic (big sandwich and drink) for all students on Fridays (beach day) and Saturdays (excursion day).
DO I NEED A MEDiCAL INSURANCE:
Students from the European Union won't need an extra or "special" medical insurance as it will work the same that works in their countries. Students from a non European Union country will have to have insurance that covers them while traveling in Europe in case they want to reduce any possible expenses from any medical assistence they may need while in Spain. So, a travel insurance is an essential purchase on any overseas trip.
